What is a social media director is a question that is being asked around the world as the new key, possibly primary role, in the corporate marketing department begins to take shape.
Reading articles by those of us who have chosen this as our new title, for at least for the next 6 months at any rate, until the next flavour the month kicks in! It is fascinating to see the different approaches people have. Those from HR seem to come at this from a you need a degree, a doctorate and 10 years real time experience to get a job ... shit, if I was that dull then I’d be in HR! OOOPPS that’s only those with a sense of humour left in HR to sanction my next role ... or well, it gets rid of the time wasters!! Then you have the guys who’ve been chasing the corporate dollar who feel they rule the world ... remember today’s corporate is tomorrows SME and Jimmy from the cafe has just started a blog about fly fishing which is gaining interest from the fishing world and in the USA Obama wants a chat as he’d like to brush up on his technique ... while over in the UK Katie Price would like a natter on techniques to re-catch “Old Pete”! Some are creating lists to say Social Media Directors must know this, that and the other before they get interviewed ... but what about Y that came in out 2 months ago and didn’t get in the brief because of the corporate process and sign off. Already 500,000,000 have signed up to Not So Noisy.com, the latest all singing and dancing social community that even your granny can join in because it respects her need for a little hush when she presses X! And do you know what the answer is... YOU decide... it’s great, if you are employing a Social Media Director then you can decide the spec as the reality is you and your director need to be on the same page. You need to trust that they know their stuff and have their finger on the pulse ... they need to be able to keep you posted with the information that you require in a format that you and the board will understand ... while at the same time be able to dialogue with the thought leaders in your world who are playing with all the social media marketing widgets ... then you have the people that really matter, all your customers and fans who you want tuning into your social media world.
